I'm looking to buy a goldfish tank and i have a few questions?
Q1:
I think i need:
- A 10 gallon tank (glass/rectangular prism)
- An efficient but quiet filter. I hate noisy filters.
- Gravel
- A few artificial plants
- Aerator
- Good quality but *cheap* gold fish food
- 3-4 goldfish
- Some cleaning materials?
Is there anything else i need? Also how much should all this add up to if i get the best quality for the cheapest price? For example what are the best brands for the lowest prices?
Q2: Can you mix normal and fancy goldfish together? I was planning on getting 2-3 fancy goldfish and 1 regular goldfish (or is it called a comet?). Is this good for the fish?
Q3: How often should i change the water and clean out the whole tank? And how (like what are the steps?)
For these questions im asking for it to be from your own personal experiences for raising healthy and long lasting goldfish. I’ve had a couple of goldfish a few years ago, but they died when i moved to a new house a hundred miles away!
Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

A 10 gallon is too small for Goldfish. They are big and very messy fish, they need very large tanks with very big filters. And you can’t mix fancy and common/comet types, the common/comet types get twice the size of the fancies and, with Goldfish being bullies, can fatally injure more delicate fancies. You should only mix Goldfish with other Goldfish with similar traits.

If you wanted a Goldfish, for fancies consider the minimum of 20 gallons for the first fish, 10 gallons per fish thereafter. Double that for the larger and more active common/comet types – which are best in large ponds really.
As for tank maintenance, on a properly stocked, fully cycled tank, you should only need to do 20% water changes once a week with a gravel vac and dechlorinated water. You should never do 100% cleans, that will seriously stress out the fish and can cause problems with water quality!
Goldfish are actually surprisingly expensive and high maintenance fish to keep really, if you do it properly. If you are only gunning for a small 10 gallon, have a look at this instead:

a ten gallon tank kit with everything you need without the fish is 60-70 dollars at petco and petsmart. the gold fish food will more than likely be 2 dollars for any kind. you will need to buy gravel plants and water conditonair and a scrubbing brush all that is probably 20 dollars. other than that your good and the fish you have selected can go fine together but i would suggest 2 fancy gold fish and 1 coment (by the way coment gold fish cost 13 cents XD)
you need a 30 gallon tank at least if you want to get 2-3 fish, they need each 10 gallons to grow, you can get one comet and put it in a 10 gallon, the general rule is 10 gallons for each fish, and an extra 10 gallons
you can mix commet and fancy, but you dont want to mix bubble eye with non bubble eye because the non bubbles will eat all the food, bubble ones are slower (this includes moors) I dont know much about cleaning goldfish but heres a site devoted to the care of goldfish

Unfortunately goldfish get very big and need much bigger tanks
. If I were you I would look into these fish.

A 10 gallon tank package can range from around $20 to $50. I like my tank made by tetra (I think it is them). The look of flourescent lights look better in my opinion and are beter for live plants. All you have to do for niosy filter is put something around the mouth of the filter. Like a block of foam should work. Aerator is not necessary. Filters usually disturb the top of the water enough, which adds oxygen. A gravel vacuum would be good to get. They are around $10.
2. No, the commons and comets will harass the fancy goldfish.
3. Do not clean out the tank. Do a 25% water change weekly. So, take out around 2 gallons weekly. A vacuum makes this process easy!.
Another note: make sure you read up on cycling your tank! Anyways, I hope you either get a heater and get some tropical fish or get the fish I suggested all ready. Hope I helped!
I thought of another animal you could put in that tank. Fire belly newts
wow a 10 gallon is only big enough for 1 fancy goldfish.
just get a regular bio-wheel filter they aren’t noisy.
i wouldn’t mix commons with fancys because feeding problems.
if you want commons/comets you should have over 50 gallons of water.
cycle the tank first, then just do weekly water changes.( 25%)
and about every month you should clean the sides of the tank, clean the filter media, and siphon the gravel.
Answer to Question 1- you have pretty much everything. all you need to make it finished is a fish. ha ha. also i would buy fish tank cleaner. you can find it at pet smart and walmart and other places. its a bottle that you put 2 drops into the water and it cleans it out to make the fish healthier.
Answer to Question 2- i would not mix two fish together unless they are the same type and if you really want to put two in the same tank i would ask a worker or something at the store you buy your fish about her opinion on putting the two fish in the same tank.
Answer to Question 3- once you get the fish food (which you have) look at the bottle and it should say when you should feed the fish. i would change the water every 2-3 days. but if it looks dirty i would also give it a quick change. i would clean out the whole tank every 4-5 days. i would clean the tank with a sponge.
tanks are usally around 10-20 dollars. each fish would be like $1-$2.
well, i hope i helped. and congrats on your new fish
