Goldfish needs no extra heat as they are cold water fish and they are somewhat dirtier fish. The graver in a tank or bowl is nice to look at but also helps with the "good bacteria" It give more places for the bacteria to grow. Get a syphon from the pet shop and once a week syphon about 1/4 to 1/2 of the water out by placing the syphon into the gravel, you will notice the dirt coming from the gravel. Use stress coat added to the tank and fill tank back up with fresh water. In larger tanks, gravel provides a space for sediment to aggregate and form a biological filter. With the right setup, you can have good bacteria fight off the bad bacteria making your tank much easier to maintain.
